C. Phillip "Phil" Buffington Jr., a veteran financial legal expert, conservative leader, and devoted family man, officially announced his candidacy today for Mississippi State Auditor in the Republican Primary. Buffington brings extensive executive, legal, and regulatory experience advising community banks, financial institutions, and businesses across Mississippi and the nation to the campaign, offering a proven record of fiscal stewardship, corporate governance, and fraud prevention.

"I’m running for Mississippi State Auditor because I believe the people of Mississippi deserve a person who wants to make sure your tax dollars are not wasted or stolen and a government that is transparent, accountable, and responsible with every taxpayer dollar," Buffington said.

"Leadership in Mississippi means more than holding an elected office; it also means helping prevent fraud, earning trust and protecting taxpayer dollars, and developing a vision for the future. The Auditor’s office should be about professionalism. It should be about protecting the public trust and working with others to make government better for all."

Buffington has been a managing Partner and Financial Services-Community Bank Team Leader and has spent his career guiding financial institutions through complex state and federal banking laws, risk assessments, and corporate governance. His extensive background includes hands-on experience in fraud prevention practices, detection, internal investigations, asset recovery, and handling complex financial litigation involving financial fraud and director and officer liability. Beyond his private-sector practice, Buffington serves as an adjunct professor at Mississippi College School of Law teaching Banking Law and Business Planning, serves as a faculty member for the Mississippi Bankers Association School of Banking, and was recognized as Best Lawyers® Lawyer of the Year in Commercial Finance Law in 2018 and Chambers USA, The Best Lawyers in America, Martindale-Hubbell AV Peer Review Rating, and Mid-South Super Lawyers.

Buffington’s platform focuses on continued proactive fraud prevention, strict regulatory accountability, robust cybersecurity standards for state financial systems, and transparent support for local community infrastructure. Rather than relying solely on standard post-expenditure reviews, Buffington plans to bring private-sector internal control standards to state agencies to stop financial abuse before it starts and ensure taxpayer funds are used as efficiently as possible.

"I know that a traditional audit may tell us whether money was spent legally, and that is essential, but I also believe citizens deserve to know what was accomplished with the money spent, whether the expenditure solved the problem, and if there was a more efficient or more effective way to achieve the same result," Buffington said. "For more than 35 years, I have worked with financial institutions and businesses to assess risk, strengthen governance, navigate complex regulations, ensure compliance, make responsible financial decisions, and hold people accountable. Throughout my career, I have seen the importance of strong oversight, sound management, and leaders who take their responsibility to safeguard the resources entrusted to them."

A lifelong Mississippian and graduate of the University of Mississippi and Mississippi College School of Law, Buffington resides in Madison County with his wife, Sarah, to whom he has been married for 43 years. They have three adult children–Phillip (Lauren), Avery (Matt), and Will (Kat)–and five grandchildren. Buffington is deeply engaged in community service, serving on the Mississippi Republican Party State Executive Committee, the Madison County Republican Executive Committee, and as Chairman of the Mississippi Tort Claims Board following approval of his appointment by the Mississippi Senate. He also has been active in St. Andrews Cathedral over the years, serves as Chair of the Madison County Business League & Foundation Government Affairs Committee, sits on the board of the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District, has served in various capacities with the American Heart Association and Habitat for Humanity, and is a longtime youth sports coach and administrator. I believe in faith, family, friends and community and that is a driving force in my life.

"As a lifelong Mississippian, I care deeply about the future of our state," Buffington said. "I’m running to bring my executive and legal experience, independence, and commitment to public service to the Auditor’s Office. I am running because I want to be your next Auditor, not because it is the next stop on a political career. I pledge to be a champion for taxpayers, helping to prevent fraud, ensuring public funds are properly managed, identifying waste and wrongdoing, and holding the government accountable."

Buffington intends to spend the coming months traveling across Mississippi to meet with voters and outline his vision for state financial oversight ahead of the Republican Primary.
